IHS Boys Basketball - 2013 National Division II Champions!

The first ever Independence Home School varsity Boys basketball team hit the hardwood in November 2012. In their inaugural season, the Lions won the National Division II Christian Homeschool Championship.

 

 

BOYS BASKETBALL 2013

Lion basketball season runs November through March. Practices begin on Monday, November 4, 2013 in Lawrence.

 

Varsity Coaching Staff

Ric Mitchell, Varsity Head Coach

Ric Mitchell returns to IHS for the 2013-14 season having coached 150 high school varsity basketball games. Thirty of those came from last year with IHS as he led the Lions to a National Division II Christian Homeschool Association Championship trophy. 

Fifteen years before coming to IHS Mitchell coached at Independence Alternative High School (in Provo, Utah), where his team amassed a 99-21 (83%) record, which included 5 region titles, state runner up 3 times, and back-to-back state championships in 1995 and 1996.

He and his wife are the parents of seven, homeschooled children and live just outside of Lawrence, KS.

 Assistant coach: Robert Gardner

 Robert Gardner enters his second year as an assistant coach for the Lions. Gardner is the father of four home-schooled children.

 

Assistant Coach: Joey Franzitta

A former high school athlete at Cimarron High School where he lettered in both basketball and football, Joey Franzitta returns to the IHS coaching staff for his second year. Franzitta is curently a student at the University of Kansas where he is studying teaching and coaching.  

SUMMER BASKETBALL (Boys & Girls)

GIRLS' BASKETBALL SUMMER LEAGUE

For high school and junior high school girls.

Practices will normally be held once a week.

Games are on Thursdays (June  13, 20 & 27 and July 11, 18 & 25).

Cost: $40 per player (multiple students from the same family receive a discount)

BOYS' BASKETBALL CONDITIONING

High school and junior high boys interested in playing for IHS next year are invited to attend conditioning workouts beginning in May and running through the summer. Currently, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are dedicated to helping athletes improve their speed, quickness and jumping ability. Weight training and skills practice will be added as the summer progresses. SKILLS & DRILLS CLINICS (Boys & Girls)

IHS will hold a basketball Skills & Drills Clinic that wil include six training sessions to help players develop fundamentals including: ball handling, shooting, defense and more. The clinics will be run by the IHS coaching staff with help from guest coaches.       

Girls (high school & jr. high) - July 22-27  8:30-10am

Boys (high school & jr. high) - July 22-27  10-11:30am  

Location: Genesis Christian Academy (204 Washington St., Tonganoxie, KS)

Cost: $35, includes instruction, competitions and a free t-shirt.

 

 

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Beginning November 2013 IHS will field it's first high school varsity girls basketball team. Those interested in playing or helping with the team should contact IHS Athletic Director, Ric Mitchell, (785) 760-3700, ric@ihssports.org.

 

 

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

Beginning November 2013 IHS will field it's junior high basketball teams. One for boys and one for girls. A search is currently underway for coaches, and an announcement is expected in May.
